[WESTERN AMERICANA]. LEA, Tom (1907-2001). The King Ranch. Kingsville, TX: The King Ranch, 1957.
2 volumes, 8vo. Numerous plates, maps and illustrations in the text by Lea, many in color, plus several facsimiles of documents. Original coarse linen with designs of saddle blankets used on the King Ranch; original linen slipcase with leather lettering-piece gilt.
FIRST EDITION, LIMITED ISSUE, one of 3000 copies designed by Carl Hertzog and printed on all-rag paper watermarked with the King Ranch brand. “Perhaps the most exhaustive ranch history ever written, and a tremendous account of the cattle industry in south Texas. No copies of The King Ranch were sold, and while 3,000 copies were printed, only those given away by the owners of the ranch have come on the market, hence its rarity” (Reese Six Score 69). Adams, Herd 1318; Jenkins 121A.
