[McMURTRY, Larry (1936-2021), his copy]. FLANNER, Janet. The Cubical City. New York and London: G.P. Putnam’s Sons, 1926.
8vo. Original black cloth stamped in gilt, red top stain, illustrated endpapers (some spotting on lower cover); original dust jacket (spine sunned, closed tear near foot, few spots of worming on rear panel, some wear to flaps). Provenance: Larry McMurtry (his bookplate, which he designed, features the horseshoe-shaped brand his father and grandfather used on the McMurtry cattle), from his personal library at his home in Archer City.
FIRST EDITION of the author’s only novel. “Occasionally there appears a first novel which refuses to fit into any of the stock descriptive categories that the publisher usually finds serviceable. Such a novel is ‘The Cubical City,’ an intense, vital story of Manhattan which follows none of the conventional fiction lines. Miss Flanner has created for herself a stylistic idiom that is highly individual, and complete originality marks the unfolding of her narrative” (inside front flap). Flanner was an American writer, journalist and expatriate who served as the Paris correspondent of The New Yorker magazine from 1925 until she retired in 1975. IN THE RARE DUST JACKET.
