8vo. Original black cloth, gilt-lettered spine; original dust jacket (some light sunning to spine and flap edges, some edgewear along top edge). Provenance: Larry McMurtry (his bookplate, which he designed, features the horseshoe-shaped brand his father and grandfather used on the McMurtry cattle), from his personal library at his home in Archer City; also with McMurtry’s neat ownership signature (ca. 1962); and with McMurtry’s invoice from a bookseller (21 June 1962), which lists McMurtry’s inaugural business name in the book trade as “Dust Bowl Books”, that he came up with while in graduate school at Rice University. “I called myself Dust Bowl Books and issued a leaflet”, which he mimeographed on the copier at Rice University’s English department and said in an article with the New York Times that it is “now more rare than any of the books it describes” (see Shelf-Possessed, New York Times, 27 July 2008).
