FIRST EDITION. This large-format volume is a celebration of the Japanese research vessel Soya, the Showa Base and Japan’s participation in the 1957 International Geophysical Year. It provides an historical overview of Antarctic exploration and the role played by the ten other countries participating in the IGY as well. Major sections are dedicated to the involvements of Japan, United States, Argentina, Great Britain, France, New Zealand, Norway, Australia and Russia. Notable is the beginning section entitled “The History of the Antarctic Expeditions” which includes a very informative essay related to the Japanese Antarctic Expedition and Lieutenant Nobu Shirase.
