FIRST EDITION, SIGNED BY TANIGUCHI. A very informative publication with translations by Zenya Taniguchi. Written in commemoration of the 80th anniversary of Shirase’s expedition toward the South Pole, the publication consists of three parts:
Part One is a reproduction of The Geographic Journal article of July to August 1933 by Ivar Hamre entitled “The Japanese South Polar Expedition 1911-1912: A Little Known Episode in Antarctic Exploration”. (Ross 3.15).
Part Two is entitled “Newspaper Articles on the Japanese Antarctic Expedition with the “Kainan Maru” during her Calls at Wellington and Sydney in 1910-1912.” This is a duplication of 30 Australian newspaper articles originally compiled by Kou Kusunoki documenting the Japanese Antarctic Expedition’s stay in Wellington Sydney between their two voyages to Antarctica. This also includes seven newspaper articles documenting their return to New Zealand after completing the Japanese Antarctic Expedition. Part Three is the Japanese translation. These newspaper articles were originally assembled and published as a group by Kou Kusunoki. The articles, when read as a body of work and in sequence, give a clear understanding of Shirase, his crew and several fascinating occurrences during the expedition’s stay in Australia and New Zealand.
