[SHIRASE, Nobu (1861-1946)]. The Struggle for the South Pole [in: The National Geographic Magazine, Volume XXII No. 4, April 1911]. Washington, D.C.: National Geographic Society, 1911.
8vo (254 x 171 mm). Full-page map, 4 photographic illustrations. Original printed wrappers (upper cover unevenly sunned at bottom fore-edge, spine reinforced). An informative article discussing the Antarctic intentions of Roald Amundsen, Robert F. Scott, and Nobu Shirase. “The Japanese party is led by Lieutenant Shirase. Like Amundsen’s, it is small in numbers. Shirase has not had the training in ice-work that Scott and Amundsen have experienced, and it is doubtful whether the heroic spirit of his party can prevail against the lack of equipment” (see p. 409). Ross 3.12 (“Very scarce”).
