ASAHINA, K. Japanese Antarctic Expedition of 1911-12 [in: Polar Human Biology, edited by O.G. Edholm and E.K.E. Gunderson]. London: William Heinemann Medical Books, 1973.
8vo (216 x 133 mm). 4 photographic illustrations, drawing and map. Original turquoise boards; original unclipped dust jacket (light edgewear).
FIRST EDITION containing the majority of papers delivered at the Symposium on Human Biology and Medicine in the Antarctic held at the Scott Polar Research Institute, Cambridge, England, on 19-21 September 1972. Notable is the introductory paper delivered by Asahina to open the conference. The article provides a very revealing biographical sketch of Shirase along with an informative overview of the Japanese Antarctic Expedition. One of the illustrations in the article is a sketch reproduced from Nankyoku-ki, illustrating the surprise encounter of the Japanese Antarctic Expedition and the Norwegian Antarctic Expedition at the Bay of Whales. The photo accompanying the sketch captures the first sighting by Shirase’s crew of Amundsen’s ship “Fram” which was first assumed by Shirase and his men to be a pirate vessel. Ross 3.20 (“Scarce”).
