5 volumes, 8vo (260 x 184 mm). Numerous illustrations including a three-panel foldout in vol. 2 and 6 black-and-white images taken before departure for the JAE. Original color pictorial wrappers. These five magazines are August 1978 reprints of Meiji-era magazine originally printed in 1910-1911 (Meiji 43-44). These are the only reprints of the originals which do not appear on the market. Shirase and Japanese Antarctic Expedition related contents in each issue are as follows:

1.Originally published August 1910. Content: outline of the expedition; qualifications of the expedition members and their accommodations; the sea route of the expedition; budget & equipment; rules and caution; and the overall plan.

2: Originally published December 1910. Fold out sheet showing 6 black-and-white rarely seen images of the Japanese Antarctic Expedition.

3. Originally published in January 1911. Content: Departure of the Antarctic expedition, ceremony at Nijubashi, ceremony at Shibaura, boarding, departure, crew member list, the song of Antarctic expedition by Keiichi Tada.

4: Originally published in March 1911. Content: “Kainan Maru” heads for the Antarctic.

5. Originally published April 1911. Content: Message from the Antarctic expedition.
