A very limited, if not one-of-one, reproduction of the original 16mm film compilation documenting the Japanese Antarctic Expedition of 1910-1912. The footage includes preparation for departure, the journey south, the return to and stay in New Zealand, the second attempt to reach Antarctica, landfall on the Antarctic Continent and the return to Japan.
This rare and unique copy, unseen to the public, was gifted to Chet Ross by the Assist. Director of the Memorial Hall of the Shirase Expeditionary Party to the South Pole, Nikaho, Japan in November 2010 as an appreciation for producing his now invaluable bibliography, Lt. Nobu Shirase and the Japanese Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1912 (2010). Run time: 55 minutes and 54 seconds. Format: DVD black-and-white. Housed in an elegant aluminum case. Ross 5.4A (“Very rare”).
