BRAINARD, David L. (1856-1946). Six Came Back. Edited by Bessie Rowland James. Indianapolis and New York: The Bobbs-Merrill Company, [1940].

8vo. Illustrated from photographs. Original gilt-lettered blue cloth; original dust jacket (chipping with losses at ends and corners, closed tear to front panel at top edge).

FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED BY BRAINARD in the year of publication. Brainard was a US Army Brigadier General and Arctic explorer who was detailed to the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition 1881-84 led by Lt. Adolphus Greely which achieved farthest north. After exploring Lady Franklin Bay and Ellesmere Island, the relief ships failed to break through the ice channels for two years forcing the crew to abandon Fort Conger for Cape Sabine, where they spent the third winter with very little supplies. Of the 26 crew members, only 6 survived including Brainard after they were rescued in June 1884.
