[BURSEY, Jack, Lt. Commander (1903-1980). A bottle of brandy taken on Operation Deepfreeze, 1955-57.
This bottle of Coronet VSQ Brandy was distributed by the U.S. Medical department to Bursey when he led a military operation to Antarctica in 1955. This Operation Deepfreeze expedition was the first in a series of trips to the South Polar region which signaled a renewal in American interest in the Antarctic that lasted until 1998 when the US Navy officially withdrew from the region. Bursey was aboard Richard Byrd’s first expedition to the Antarctic in 1927 as a seaman on the barque the SS City of New York and again in 1939 on Byrd’s third expedition to the Antarctic. With an LOA from a previous owner describing the provenance of acquiring it directly from Bursey while lodging in his guest house in Montague, Michigan.
