COOK, Frederick A. (1865-1940). My Attainment of the Pole. New York: The Polar Publishing Co., 1911.
Small 4to. 32 plates from photographs. Original pictorial brown cloth lettered in gilt (hinges broken, rear joint split and mostly detached, ends worn). Provenance: James B. Hamilton (see inscription from Cook; some ephemera laid in).
FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED BY COOK “WITH THE JOYS OF ZERO’S LOWEST”. Cook was an American explorer who claimed to have reached the North Pole before Robert Peary which would have made him the first American to do so but this claim has been disputed ever since. This is Cook’s narrative of that expedition with a discussion of the controversy over the validity of those claims which would prove insufficient to counter the accolades gathered by Peary. Arctic Bib. 3389.
