[DISCOVERY EXPEDITION]. An advertisement for Buchanan’s “Red Seal” Scotch Whisky. London, 1901.
Original chromolithograph (sight 12 ½ x 19”) depicting the RRS Discovery trapped in ice off in the distance, with the shore party heading inward to hunt red seals on the jagged ice cliffs of Antarctica. Original letterpress matting (light soiling) and quarter sawn oak frame blindstamped with the company’s name “James Buchanan & Co.” (overall, 23 ½ x 28 ½”). The RRS Discovery launched in 1901, carrying Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton on their first journey to the Antarctic, known as the Discovery Expedition (officially the British National Antarctic Expedition) which would achieve a Furthest South of 82 degrees 18 minutes and determine that Antarctica was indeed a continent. It appears that Buchanan’s was a supplier to Scott’s Discovery Expedition.
A RARE PIECE OF POLAR EPHEMERA. We could only locate one other copy, that being in the National Library of Scotland.
