DOORLY, Gerald S. (1880-1956). In the Wake. With a foreword by Edward R. G. R. Evans. London: Sampson Low, Marston & Co., n.d. [ca.1936-37].
8vo. Original red cloth (spine slightly darkened, very light rubbing at ends).
FIRST EDITION, in Rosove’s secondary binding, INSCRIBED BY DOORLY AND HIS WIFE on the front free endpaper (the recipient’s name is blacked out). Doorly was third in command on board two voyages of the Morning, the relief ship for the Discovery expedition (1901-04). On their return, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle suggested to Doorly that he write a book on the Morning’s role in the expedition as Colbeck, the ship’s captain, did not write an account. His work, The Voyages of the ‘Morning’ (1916) is not only a “very interesting, pleasant, and readable firsthand account but also one of the scarcest books on Antarctic exploration” (Rosove).
