Folio. 11 albumen photographic prints mounted on card (lacking 9 pages of explanatory text which are supplied in photocopy and the final print). Original red cloth portfolio, title gilt on upper board (rebacked, dampstaining and spotting to mostly front cover). Provenance: Andreas Zust (his sale, Christie’s, 9 May 2002, lot 76); Martin L. Greene, a notable polar collector; his sale, Christie’s New York, 7 December 2017, lot 378).

A VERY RARE SET OF THESE LARGE FORMAT PHOTOGRAPHIC PLATES DEPICTING THE AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN NORTH POLE EXPEDITION, reproducing paintings by Adolf Obermüllner after drawings by Julius Payer of his time in the High Arctic. Payer led the Austro-Hungarian North Pole expedition, on which he discovered Franz Joseph Land. List of the prints available on request. Chavanne 3407; not in Arctic Bib.
