FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, INSCRIBED BY ARCTIC EXPLORER ROBERT BARTLETT, THE MASTER OF THE VESSEL ROOSEVELT. Bartlett (1875-1946) served as first-mate under his uncle John Bartlett aboard the Windward during Peary’s first North Pole Expedition 1898-1902. Bartlett helped lay Peary out for surgery following his return from a three-month sledging journey that caused eight of his frostbitten toes to be amputated. Impressed by this, Peary enlisted Bartlett as captain and ice master for his next two North Pole attempts, in 1905-06 and 1908-09 aboard the SS Roosevelt, including the successful attempt at reaching the pole in 1909. For this, Bartlett was awarded the Hubbard Medal of the National Geographic Society. In 1914, Bartlett captained the doomed Karluk Expedition, whose leadership helped save the lives of its stranded crew after its leader Vilhjalmur Stefansson abandoned the expedition.
