SHACKLETON, Ernest H. (1874-1922). The Antarctic Book. Winter Quarters 1907-1909 [dummy copy of the supplement to: The Heart of the Antarctic]. London: William Heinemann, 1909.
4to. 4 tipped-in color portraits, 6 etched plates after George Marston, one small linocut (some spotting to etchings). Original vellum-backed boards, spine lettered in gilt, others uncut (recased, some discrete touch-ups to spine, light surface wear and soiling to boards, spotting to free endpapers).
DUMMY COPY OF THE LIMITED ISSUE, SIGNED BY ALL 16 MEMBERS OF THE SHORE PARTY. A true rarity, and possibly unique, differing slightly from the original supplement issued with the limited edition and is as follows: the signature sheets are now the front and rear pastedowns, the Shackleton mounted portrait is now the frontispiece, the contents leaf is in the rare first state which includes the mention of “Aurora Australis: A Poem by E. Shackleton” (an issue point that is so scarce that it was only discovered recently by polar collector Joe Bugayer, and was unknown to Rosove, Spence and Renard; see Rosove 305 footnote), the original text is replaced by 97pp. from vol. I (with several pages repeated from “The Aurora” chapter). We were unable to locate any other dummy copies of this work or any mention for that matter of such a printing ever having existed.
