[SHACKLETON, Ernest (1874-1922)]. “Nearest the South Pole”. Programme. Monday, January 2nd, 1911.

8vo. Large centerfold map of Antarctica showing previous expeditions, 3 photographic reproductions in the text taken from Shackleton’s “The Heart of the Antarctic” (William Heinemann, 1909). Original light blue wrappers printed in black and red, portrait photograph of Shackleton by Thomson on front cover (front joint marred, possibly extracted, horizontal centerfold, inner joints reinforced).

A RARE SHACKLETON LECTURE PAMPHLET. The British Antarctic Expedition of 1907-09, which sailed from Lyttleton, New Zealand, aboard Nimrod on January 1, 1908, is best known for having reached within ninety-seven miles of the South Pole (almost four years before Amundsen and Scott achieved the Pole itself). On 14 December 1911, Amundsen would be the first to successfully reach the South Pole- less than a year after this pamphlet was printed. We were unable to locate any known copies, institutionally or at auction. [With:] an oversized portrait photographic reproduction of Shackleton (The Mentor Association, 1913).
