YOUNG, Allen (1827-1915). The Two Voyages of the ‘Pandora’ in 1875 and 1876. London: Edward Stanford, 1879.
Small 4to. 2 folding lithographic maps, in pockets at front and rear (one in facsimile), 9 wood-engraved plates (single marginal dampstain to a few plates, folding map with reinforced repairs to verso folds). Original blue cloth, blocked in gilt and black (spine and extremities a bit darkened, extreme ends discretely repaired, gentle rubbing at fore-corners, renewed endpapers). Provenance: Frank E. Ellis (bookplate and ownership signature).
RARE FIRST EDITION INTENDED FOR PRIVATE CIRCULATION. In it, Young describes the voyages in 1875-76 to Lancaster and Smith Sounds in search of Sir John Franklin’s lost expedition, based on notes from his private journal. Young states in the preface that “at the suggestion of a few friends I have requested Mr. Stanford to publish it. The volume contains merely a simple record, or log, from notes in my private journal...” Young purchased the Pandora from his own funds for an expedition in search of Franklin’s records. Includes additional topographical notes and discussion of Eskimos. According to Chet Ross, this is considered “one of the scarcest of 19th century works on the Arctic” (catalogue note). Arctic Bib. 19759.
