[VIETNAM]. A photograph album of 224 gelatin silver prints taken by a German naval officer during the Vietnam War, 1954-57.
Snapshots in various sizes (3 x 2” and 5 ½ x 3 ½”), each captioned in manuscript, images depict indigenous life and custom, along with scenes of war efforts; housed in a contemporary morocco album (extremities gently worn). A striking and uncommon photo album of an important era in the history of Vietnam’s fight for independence, with images extending to regions between Hue to Ho Chi Minh City. The photos were taken around the time that anti-colonial resistance succeeded in overthrowing the French colonialists with the Dien Bien Phu battle in May 1954, and when Vietnam was divided into the north and south at the 17th parallel.
