Half contemporary dark olive calf, marbled sides, spine compartments divided with gilt fillets, straight-grain morocco lettering-piece gilt in second, others gilt-tooled (extremities rubbed, spine a bit darkened). (Two marginal closed tears repaired with tape). Provenance: George W. Wroughton, Esq. (bookplate); Garrett Biblical Institute (stamps) gifted by C.O. Boring in memory of Rev. E.M. Boring (inscription in gutter of the preface with stamps dated 1922).
FIRST EDITION of this scarce naval manual published at the expense of the author, with all profits going for the benefit of the Royal Naval Charitable Society. Among the subscribers listed at the end is Capt. Francis W. Austen, Jane Austen’s brother, who had a bright naval career.
