FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED TO SCIENTIST AND POLYMATH HERBERT SPENCER (1820-1903). Spencer was a notable English intellect in the 19th century and is credited with coining the term “survival of the fittest” after reading Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species (1859).
