Tall 8vo. Frontispiece, 21 lithographed plates, some in color, numerous wood-engraved vignettes in the text. Original gilt-lettered maroon cloth (spine and rear cover sunned, light wear to front joint and extremities). Provenance: Herbert Spencer (rubberstamp on title-page; see inscription below).

FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED TO SCIENTIST AND POLYMATH HERBERT SPENCER (1820-1903). Spencer was a notable English intellect in the 19th century and is credited with coining the term “survival of the fittest” after reading Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species (1859).
