ANNAND, George (1890-1980). Chart Map of Manhattan. 1937. Color map in Art Deco style showing the Waldorf Astoria as the center of Manhattan. 9 x 22”. Folded as issued. Scarce. Slight corner creases. A-/B+. Annand worked “as a freelance commercial artist for much of his long career, [and] created pictorial maps, designed dust jackets, illustrated books and magazines, and turned out advertisements. Through much of this work, Annand showed a genuine interest in cartography” (Picturing America, pp. 34-8). He is credited with designing the first book jacket with a pictorial map (ibid.). The present map was commissioned by the Waldorf Astoria. Picturing America, pl. 53.
