DODGSON, Charles Lutwidge (“Lewis Carroll”) (1832-1898). Autograph letter signed (“C.L. Dodgson”) to playwright Augustus William Dubourg, Christ Church, Oxford, 1 February 1873.
One page, 12mo, old folds, some spotting.
ALICE ON STAGE. “Don’t trouble yourself to broach the subject of a dramatized Alice to Mr. Blunt, as I have myself done so with Mr. German Reed” - with what effect, remains to be seen… [Give my love to Evelyn] if she considers herself young enough for so familiar a message…”. Dubourg tried to help Carroll get Alice on to the boards, but a full-fledged stage Alice did not come until Savile Clarke’s musical play materialized in 1886. Arthur Cecil Blunt, stage name Arthur Cecil, was a well-known actor that was admired by Carroll, so much so that Carroll suggested the idea of Cecil producing a drama based on Alice or Looking-Glass but it never transpired.
