MERTZ, Albert “Kid” (American, 1904-1988). A Group of Two Painted Wooden Plaques and One Sculpture. [Ca. 20th century]. Paint on wood remnants. Unsigned. Two are hanging plaques with handmade wire hangers, one is a standing sculpture. Sizes range from 10 x 17 ½” to 3 ½ x 11 ½”. General wear (due to the nature of the wood pieces), some soiling. Plaques are titled, “He Who is Wr appedupinhimself makesa Small Pack Age” and “Hi TheBest Eraser is a Good Nites Sleep / The FirstLiar Don’tstandachance From Owl’s Roost”; the sculpture is titled “Diblemitthons Smark Larfreesh Cheeken / TheGreatestRemedy ForAngerisDelay–”. Mertz, a one-time prize fighter and autoworker, used his off-beat creations to decorate his humble home and tempt passing tourists to visit his remote property. Unusual textures in wood and paint inherent. Good condition.
