ARTIST UNKNOWN. (American, 20th century) Jazz / The Chicago Gang. 1962. Oil on homemade canvas board. Signed “Baumgartner” and dated lower left. 16 x 20 ¼”. Frame: 19 x 23”. Surface dirt. Some paint loss upper right and lower left quadrants. Some lifting of canvas from board. The image depicts the names of the Austin High School Gang, a 1920s jazz group of white musicians from the West Side of Chicago, who all attended Austin High School. The group rose to prominence as pioneers of the Chicago style, which was modeled on a hurried version of New Orleans Jazz. Also included are Benny Goodman, Gene Krupa, and members of the Chicago Rhythm Kings, who were also part of the Chicago jazz scene at that time.
