JENKINS, Paul (American, 1923-2012) Untitled. 1958. Oil on canvas. 25 x 28” Frame 25 ¾ x 29”. Signed in paint lower left recto. Signed, inscribed and dated in ink verso, “Paul Jenkins - For Mike from Paul – New York 1958”. The paintings of Paul Jenkins have come to represent the spirit, vitality, and invention of post-World War II American abstraction. Employing an unorthodox approach to paint application, Jenkins is as much identified with the process of controlled paint-pouring and canvas manipulation as with the gem-like veils of transparent and translucent color which have characterized his work since the late 1950s. This nuanced work is one of the earliest examples demonstrating where Jenkins aesthetic and philosophy was heading. Light surface dirt. Craquelure primarily in lower half. Excellent condition.
