MASKELYNE, John Nevil (1839 – 1917). Two Portraits of John Nevil Maskelyne. [London], ca. 1910. Two glossy sepia tone press photographs of the “grand old man of magic” and doyen of the British magic scene. In the first, he poses at a foot-powered lathe in his workshop, wearing a white shop apron and surrounded by tools; in the second, he sits at his desk, pen in hand, looking directly at the camera. Each image approximately 6 ½ x 8 ½” with the latter bearing two small tears. Newspaper captions and stamps to versos. SCARCE.
The printed captions pasted to the versos of each image state that Maskelyne, “A great wizard … is about to retire after nearly fifty years strenuous work as a public entertainer.”
