[Bound with”] A Review of Captain Basil Hall’s Travels in North America, in the Years 1827 and 1828. London: R. J. Kennett, 1830. 8vo. Second edition. [Bound with”] Remarks on Mr. Tytler’s Historical View of the Progress of Discovery… Edinburgh Cabinet Library, 1833. 8vo. [Bound with”] Remarks on the Revised Edition of the Edinburgh Cabinet Library. London: Sherwood, Gilbert, and Piper, 1832. 8vo. Bound in nineteenth-century full tan calf, boards decoratively ruled in gilt, spine stamped in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, brown and burgundy gilt morocco lettering labels, marbled endleaves (joints broken and re-hinged, binding worn and somewhat soiled, text with occasional foxing and soiling). There is an inserted leaf of manuscript notes in an unknown hand (Biddle’s?) correcting a passage on p. 30 of Captain Basil Hall’s Travels, and the corresponding passage is marked out in contemporary ink. The first two works with an autograph note on each title-page by English historian Nicholas Harris Nicolas (1799-1848), stating that these works were given to him by the author. Provenance: With the heraldic bookplate of John Sheepshanks. Biddle requested that his American and English publishers destroy the copies of his Memoir of Sebastian Cabot due to several errors, so it is rare that there are surviving copies. Howes B340.
