[AVIATION]. STOCKDALE, James (1923-2005) and Sybil (1924-2015). In Love and War. The Story of a Family’s Ordeal and Sacrifice During the Vietnam Years. New York: Harper & Row Publishers, [1984]. 8vo. Illustrated. Publisher’s blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt (light rubbing, sunning to binding); publisher’s printed dust jacket (some mild wear, creasing, a few short tears to spine). FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING, INSCRIBED BY ADMIRAL JAMES STOCKDALE TO AVIATION AUTHOR BOB KOVALCHIK on the half-title: “27 October 1993 For Bob, with All best wishes, Jim Stockdale”. Medal of Honor recipient Admiral James Stockdale flew some of the earliest missions as a Navy aviator during the Vietnam War. He was shot down over Hanoi, and was a P.O.W. for 7 ½ years (he was the highest ranking naval officer in captivity). During those years of torture and deprivation, he never revealed any information to his captors, and provided leadership and support to his fellow prisoners. His wife, Sybil, campaigned relentlessly for his release and the release of other American P.O.W.s, forming the League of POW/MIA Families. In later years, James Stockdale was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and was Ross Perot’s running mate during the 1992 presidential election.
