[BIBLE, in English]. The Byble, That Is To Say All The Holy Scripture…. London: John Daye, 1549. 4to. With Prologue by William Tyndale. Lacking nearly 30 leaves, including title-page and all preliminaries (text begins at cii), several leaves after Deuteronomy, Job, Malachy, (including second title-page); ssssiiii is the final leaf present. Sv, Aaaavi are both lacking lower half, TTi, TTvi, Aaaai are missing. Near contemporary full diced Russia, rebacked in later calf, spine lettered in gilt (binding worn, several leaves with repairs at outer margins, margins trimmed close at upper margin, Cii restored at margin in later ink, text soiled, worn). An early Thomas Matthew (pseudonym of John Rogers (1505-1555)) version of the bible in English, which “welds together the best work of Tyndale and Coverdale, [and] is generally considered to be the real primary version of our English bible” (Herbert.) This innovative text combined Tyndale’s New Testament and Myles Coverdale’s (1488-1569) translations. The famous “Bug” bible (from the following passage in Psalms “So that thou shall not neede to be affrayed of any Bugges by night”; sometimes known as the “wife beater’s bible” due to the following quote in 1 Peter: “And if she be not obedient and healpfull unto hym, endevoureth to beate the feare of God into her heade”).
