(Title-page mounted and in two pieces, text title is possibly an early facsimile; title-page possibly supplied, first seven leaves re-mounted and heavily worn and torn with some loss, text toned, worn, soiled). Contemporary full calf, paneled in blind, spine stamped in gilt, five raised bands, brown gilt morocco lettering label, rebacked, preserving the original spine (binding worn, soiled, chain hole on front board (chain is lacking), joints cracked). FIRST EDITION. Jewell was the Bishop of Salisbury under Elizabeth I; his Apology of the Church of England (1562) was an important statement of faith of the Church of England and responded to the challenges of the Catholic Church.
