LATIMER, Hugh (1487-1555). Fruitfull Sermons Preached by the right reverend Father, and constant Martyr of Jesus Christ M. Hugh Latimer… London: John Daye, 1584. 8vo. Title-page with wood engraving, and wood-engraved initials throughout. Lacking final leaf. Contemporary paneled calf, brown gilt morocco lettering leaf (front board detached, binding worn, soiled, rear joint cracked, text toned, soiled, worn, upper margins trimmed a bit close with some occasional loss, fols. [iv] and 24 with later paper repairs with loss of text). Provenance: ownership inscription of Charles Nisbet (1736-1804), a Scottish clergyman, who eventually became the first head of Dickinson College in Pennsylvania. Fourth collected edition. Latimer was the Anglican Bishop of Worcester and was eventually burned at the stake by Catholic forces under Queen Mary I. Latimer is one of the three Oxford Martyrs of Anglicanism.
