WHARTON, Hannah (1688-1740). Some Manifestations and Communications of the Spirit, in a Forty Days Ministration in that Place London, by the Mouth of Hannah Wharton. Taken in Short-hand by M. T. London: Sam. Noble, 1730. 12mo. With Errata slip tipped-in at rear. (Boards missing, text toned, worn, soiled, with some chipping, tears). FIRST EDITION of this exceedingly rare (about a handful of these copies are extant) book on prophecy. Wharton was a later member of the Camisard sect of the French Prophet movement in the early 1700s. Although most members were Huguenots, they created controversy by their belief in prophecy and that their devout members were possessed by the Holy Spirit. The movement eventually migrated to England and the U. S., where they sought to increase their number of followers. Their movement is considered to be a precursor to the Shaker movement. Wharton was one of the last of their major prophets, and this title is the only record of her teachings and prophecies.
