Original light green cloth, spines lettered in dark green, decorative endpapers (spines skewed and sunned, light rubbing to extremities, mostly to joints and corners, faint ghosting on upper covers, possibly from an old label); folding box. Provenance: Augusta Barton (contemporary ownership signature on titles).

FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, one of only 1000 copies printed. Set in Louis XIV’s court, the story follows an American visitor which the author describes as “something new in the way of an American historical novel”. Green and Gibson A12a.
