[BAKER STREET IRREGULARS]. CHESTERTON, Gilbert Keith. (1874-1936). G. K. Chesterton’s Sherlock Holmes. A Facsimile of the Original Illustrations by Gilbert Keith Chesterton. Bloomington, Indiana: The Lilly Library, Indiana University for The Baker Street Irregulars, 2003.
19 color facsimiles of Chesterton’s drawings from Doyle’s stories of Holmes, a photo of Chesterton, and a descriptive sheet on transparent paper, all loose as issued. All approximately 11 x 8 ½”. Housed in original gilt-stamped cloth portfolio with silk ties. FIRST EDITION, LIMITED ISSUE, number 13 of 50 copies. “These original Sherlock Holmes illustrations by G. K. Chesterton were commissioned for an illustrated edition of the stories from The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. Best estimates place the commissioning of the drawings sometime between 1930, following the death of Arthur Conan Doyle, and 1936, before the death of G. K. Chesterton. Chesterton’s death may account for both the incomplete nature of the illustrations and failure of the book to appear in print.”
