[DOYLE, Arthur Conan (1859-1930)]. Original portrait photograph signed (“Arthur Conan Doyle”), Undershaw terrace, 1902.

Sepia tone photograph (image, 5 ½ x 4”, mount 9 x 6 ¾”) on original studio mount (G.W. Walder), INSCRIBED BY CONAN DOYLE to his “old friend” and dated 3 June 1907 in lower margin, soiling and small corner losses to mount. Conan Doyle is seen wearing his handsome uniform as a Deputy Lieutenant of Surrey outside his home at Undershaw (see Georgina Doyle, Out of the Shadows, image opposite p. 260, where he is seen at the same location in his military garb but without his officer’s helmet). In 1902, Conan Doyle was knighted by King Edward and appointed Deputy Lieutenant for his non-fiction pamphlet regarding the Boer War.
