DOYLE, Arthur Conan (1859-1930). Works of… With Preface and Notes by the Author. New York: D. Appleton and Company, [1902].
13 volumes, 8vo. Numerous photogravures. Original half morocco, marbled sides, by the New Netherlands Publishing Company of New York, gilt top edges, others uncut (newly rebacked to style). Provenance: Charles Edgar Sanborn (armorial bookplate).
LIMITED EDITION, number 138 of 1,000 copies of the “Author’s Edition”. RARE U.S. ISSUE, which, unlike the UK edition, includes The Hound of the Baskervilles. The limitation leaf slightly differs from the one noted by Green and Gibson, in that it mentions “Whitehall” instead of “Upshaw”. The author wanted a set that combined only the works for which he wanted to be credited, as he states in the preface: “Outside of this edition there is no work of mine up to this date which I do not willingly suppress”. The set was issued in special bindings by the New Netherlands Publishing Company of New York: half morocco, $5.00 per volume; crushed levant, $10.00 per volume. Green and Gibson A59.
