ALVARADO, Peter J. Jr. (“Bart Doe”) (American, 1920-2003). Original painting of Sherlock Holmes and other characters, done as an advertisement for Kimberly Clark Paper. [Ca. 1980]. Mixed media on Crescent artist illustration board. Signature not visible (it is signed beneath the mat). Sight 32 x 21 ¾”. Matted and framed under plexiglass 40 ½ x 29 ½”. This was commissioned by Kimberly Clark to advertise their special printer paper, “Texoprint.” Alvarado was an important artist and animator, working for the Walt Disney Studios (he did uncredited work on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, among other projects), Warner Bros. working on several cartoons, including the first Roadrunner cartoon (Fast and Furry-ous). He later worked for DePatie-Freleng (contributing to several Pink Panther cartoons), and Hanna-Barbera. He won the Winsor McCay Award for his lifetime achievement in animation in 2001, and the 1987 Animation Guild award. Concurrent with his animation career, Alvarado also did comic book artwork. This painting of Sherlock Holmes is a decidedly “un-cartoonish” and serious work, depicting Holmes with his meerschaum pipe, Watson, Mycroft Holmes, Professor Moriarty, the Hound of the Baskervilles, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Included with a copy of the final poster (approximately 36 x 24, unframed).
