BARRY, William (American, b. 1936). A group of rare original artwork, proofs and promotional material for his Sherlock Holmes daily comic strip, including: original artwork for 12 daily strips on 9 separate sheets (some are affixed to larger sheets, some are taped together). Sizes of daily strips are 6 x 18”; the large sheets with multiple daily strips are approximately 18 ½ x 20 ½ and smaller. Strips are in ink or pencil (two strips are in pencil - the rest are ink and correction fluid). All signed by Barry. -- 20 sheets of proof pages of the comic strip, each sheet with five daily strips. Hollywood: Adventure Feature Syndicate, 1975. Approximately 16 ¼ x 8 ¼”. -- Autograph note signed on Barry’s stationery addressed to his editor, Marvin Epstein, and an autograph postcard signed by Barry also addressed to Epstein. -- 3 promotional brochures for this daily strip, each with a proof sheet stapled inside. Sizes range from 11 x 11 ½” to 8 ½ x 8 ½” (folded, as issued, some rubbing, occasional toning, mild soiling). -- 2 promotional handbills for this strip, one with a biography of Barry. Both printed on both sides. Sizes range from 11 x 8 ½ to 8 ½ x 5 ½” (minor toning, rubbing). -- 2 copies of the graphic novel, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes / The Hound of the Baskervilles, A Study in Scarlet & Portrait in Red. Original wrappers (minor rubbing). Barry’s studio flooded in 1979, resulting in the ruination of nearly all of his Sherlock Holmes artwork, except for rare examples such as these. Barry’s artwork features familiar characters besides Holmes and Watson (who appear in nearly every panel), such as Prof. Moriarty, Helen Stoner (from The Adventure of the Speckled Band), inspectors Gregson and Lestrade, and more. The original artwork is from The Adventure of the Speckled Band, A Study in Scarlet, and A Portrait in Red; the proof sheets contain most of The Hound of the Baskervilles.
