SOUTER, John Bulloch (Scottish, 1890-1972, attributed to). Portrait of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson at 221B Baker Street. [Ca. 1930s]. Pastel on board in Art Deco style, depicting Holmes and Watson relaxing in their drawing room at 211B Baker with a client rushing up the steps in the background and a condemned criminal hanging at the gallows in the lower left corner. Signed (“JBS”) at the lower left corner. Sight approximately 16 ¾ x 10 ¾”. Framed in a lovely burled wood frame 22 ¾ x 16 ¾”. This major work had been discovered in 1997 in a Swedish collection and was reported in the Winter 1997 issue of The Sherlock Holmes Journal (A Real Find, edited by Nicholas Utechin). Holmes appears to be based upon British silent film actor Arthur Wotner. Sotheby’s auctioned this July 1998 (lot 453). Not examined out of frame.
