[DOLLS]. A pair of 2 handmade Sherlock Holmes dolls, one from Stanley MacKenzie via Richard Lancelyn Green. [England: ca. 20th century]. Including: [Toy Theatre People]. Handmade and painted Dutch-style wood doll with thin plastic magnifying glass and wire pipe, in handmade clothes. On plain wood base. Approximately 10 ¼” high. With hand-written receipt for the doll (“14th February 1961 Pollock’s Theatre… Dutch Doll, dressed as Sherlock Holmes Doll guaranteed to be earlier than 19 Prototype specially dressed for Exhibition in [?] Paris”). This doll is in the original shipping box addressed to Robert Hess, and with the return address of “R. G. L. Green”. Box worn. Stanley MacKenzie was one of the most prominent collectors of Sherlockiana (this is accompanied by a photocopy of an article with a photo of MacKenzie with this doll. Richard Lancelyn Green was one of the most famous and accomplished Doyle scholars. -- A handmade and painted doll of Sherlock Holmes. Carved and painted face and hands (papier mache?) with hand-sewn clothes. On felt-covered base. Approximately 14 ½” high. Minor wear to face. This doll appears to be based upon actor William Gillette (1853-1937). Mr. Hess purchased the doll from a BSI dealer, who believed that this doll was displayed at the 1939 World’s Fair.
