[THE BRETT ESTATE]. A pair of folders with personal associations for Jeremy Brett, including: Intake folder for The Charter Nightingale Hospital. [London: ca. 1986]. Intake materials in blue vinyl binding, with a card (“Room 143”) in a pocket on the front cover. 4to. In this binder are a brochure for the hospital, a contact card, a binder with loose schedule pages (“General Psychiatric Activity Programme”), and ten pages of information in plastic sleeves (“Patient Information Pack”). In 1986, Brett was taken to the Maudsley Psychiatric Hospital, Denmark Hill, London, in an ambulance, singing riotously. For the first weeks of his hospital stay, he could do little else than lying face down on his bed with clenched fists. He was there for more than two months. Later, he moved to a private hospital (most likely The Charter Nightingale Hospital). This binder was part of Brett’s estate. And with a child’s scrapbook [ca. 1930s-1940s]. String-bound cardstock binder with illustrations by Mabel Lucie Attwell pasted to covers. 4to. 14 leaves with color plates from children’s books affixed to leaves (both sides). With plates by Willy Pogany, Albert Kaye, A. E. Kennedy, Helen Jacobs, and more. Worn, chipped. Very good. Although there is no name on this scrapbook, the age of this book, and the source (Brett’s estate), strongly suggest that this was from Brett’s childhood, and not that of his children.
