[DAVIES, Charles Maurice (1828 – 1910)]. Maud Blount, Medium. A Story of Modern Spiritualism. London: Tinsley Brothers, 1877. Publisher’s pictorial boards bearing the image of a ghost at the center. 8vo. Ex-libris Sir William Crookes, with library cards of The British College of Psychic Science tipped in. Crudely rebacked, boards rubbed and worn. A scarce work and interesting association copy from the library of the famous scientist and one-time president of the Society of Psychical Research.Despite being an eminent scientist (who discovered the element thallium, among other major achievements), Crookes endorsed several fraudulent spirit mediums as genuine. He sat with and studied D.D. Home, Katie Fox, and Anna Eva Fay, among others.
