[MASKELYNE]. Phantom Shadows 3-D Glasses. [London, 1929]. Paper spectacles with one blue and one red lens, overprinted with the text “Maskelyne’s Theatre. Use for Phantom Shadows.” Length 5 ½”. Wear around edges. RARE; the first example we have encountered. The Billboard for March 2, 1929 carried this report about the illusion: “An excellent program is being offered at Maskelyne’s Theater. The real novelty is the “Phantom Shadows,” presented by Percy H. Boggis, being screamingly funny and great sport. With the aid of colored spectacles, the spectators see shadows come out from the screen and into the house, ladders crash Into the orchestra, people are hit in the face with brooms, have water flung at them. The act is the best fun experienced by visitors to Maskelyne’s for many days.”
