[CIVIL WAR]. Union Surgeon’s Manuscript Book of Orders for Surgeons in the 190th Regiment of the 5th Army Corps of the Pennsylvania Veteran Volunteers. [1865]. Folio. Approximately 15 x 10”. Manuscript notes on endleaves, 12 ruled pages, and 15 pages of later newspaper clippings, all on 19 leaves. Several pages of manuscript notes are obscured with newspaper clippings (this book was apparently repurposed as a scrapbook by later owners. Contemporary full reverse calf, board decoratively paneled in black, morocco gilt lettering label (“Orders”) on front board (spine chipped, binding heavily worn and soiled, boards nearly detached, several text leaves partially loose, worn, chipped, soiled). Fair. Despite the condition issues of this book and the fact that several pages of manuscript have been obscured by later newspaper clippings, the fair copy orders that still exist are of interest. For example: “Head Qrs. 5. A. C. W. D. A. January 21/65 / Circular In compliance with instructions from the Med. Director of A of P, when Company Commanders refuse to fill out and sign Certificates of Death, the Med. Officer in charge of the Regt. will forward these with his own signature giving the date and cause of death in full and such other facts as may be in his possession. Sgd. J. Rush Spencer Surg. U. S. Vol. Med. Director 5 A.C.” Previous owners include J. G. Chambers “Asst Surg 190th Penn Vet. Vols. Army of the Potomac”, Jonathan Comfort “Surg. 19 P.V.V.”, S. L. Chilson “190 / U.S.A.” (it appears that the copied, handwritten orders may be in the hand of Chilson). Offered with a photocopied facsimile edition of A Manual of Military Surgery by S. D. Gross (first printed 1861).
