HOWE, Julia Ward (1819-1910). Signed Photo. Boston: J. E. Purdy, 1902. Cabinet card albumen print signed by Howe in ink on the lower margin of the mount. Mount is soiled, Howe’s signature is somewhat faint. Good. Howe was an Abolitionist and poet. She is most famous for writing “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” after visiting Abraham Lincoln at the White House in 1861. It was later set to the existing music by William Steffe (it was originally written for “John Brown’s Body”). “Battle Hymn of the Republic” quickly became the most popular Union song during the Civil War and beyond.
