[JUNEAU, Solomon (1793-1856), association]. Land Deed for Joseph Pothier, Recorded and Signed by Juneau. Territory of Wisconsin, Milwaukee County, March 20, 1840, recorded on May 3, 1845. Manuscript deed on plain white paper written in an unknown hand, a parcel of land of 26 acres of the northeast quarter of section no. 5 in township no. 6 south of range no. 22 in Milwaukee county, sold by Joseph Pothier to Solomon Juneau. Approximately 9 ¼ x 8”. Two quarto pages on one quarto leaf. Signed by Pothier, notary public of Louis Franchere (twice), witness Henry K. White, and the note of reception Juneau’s hand: “Received for record May 3 A.D. 1845 at 101/4 [?] O’Clair Am and Recorded in Vol “O” of Deeds page 290 S. Juneau Reg. Mil. Co.” Paper is torn into three pieces at horizontal creases, tape residue visible on one of these creases, edgeworn, soiled, chipped, a portion of the document at the top appears to be missing, part of a wax seal is visible at the bottom right corner. Juneau was one of the founding politicians of the city of Milwaukee, and was the first mayor (1846-1847). His cook, Joe Oliver is believed to be the first African-American in Milwaukee.
