[LITHOGRAPHY]. WASHINGTON, Booker T. (1856-1915) and ROOSEVELT, Theodore (1858-1919). Dinner Given at the White House by President Roosevelt to Booker T. Washington, October 17, 1901. Chicago: Royal Picture Gallery Co., 1904. Original lithograph print (this print being the less controversial issue, without “Equality” visible on the tablecloth) commemorating the then-unprecedented dinner that Roosevelt invited Washington to attend at the White House. 15 ½ x 19 ½”. Linen backed. Several tears are repaired, some restoration at upper margin and lower left corner of image (including manuscript restoration of the copyright notice). B/B-. Rare. This print celebrates the first time that an African-American was invited to dine with the president in the White House (Roosevelt and Washington were quite friendly, but this dinner caused much negative publicity for Roosevelt, especially in the South).
