[SHEET MUSIC]. [NATIVE AMERICANS]. [RUNNING]. LEWIS, W. Deerfoot Galop. [New York: Concanen & Lee, ca. 1860s]. Rare lithographed sheet music celebrating the famous Seneca long distance runner, Deerfoot (with a full-color image on the front wrapper, “The Escape of Deerfoot the Indian Runner from the Chippeways”). 4to. 5 pp. With front and rear wrappers. Wrappers and music leaves are loose, with all being neatly trimmed at the left margins, therefore lacking the original spine. Some occasional toning, soiling. Front image has vibrant color. Very good. Deerfoot Red-Jacket (Hut-go-so-do-neh in his native tongue) was the most famous long distance runner of his day (then known as “pedestrianism”), and won many races in the United States and England. He was commonly known (and billed himself as) the best runner in the world. From the Mark Rucker Collection.
